24 J. DONNIE RICE has been promoted to foreman in the Finishing Depart ment of the Ecus- ta Paper Division. He was employed by Ecusta in June 1964 and worked in the Finishing Department as slitter service operator and re lief foreman. He worked in Ashe ville with a con struction firm be fore joining Ecusta. He is a native of Cashiers and a graduate of Glen ville High School. He served with the U. S. Navy during the war in Viet Nam. *** ROBERT C. HEWES, III has been appointed a business planner in the Fine Paper and Film Group. He joined the Sales Department of Olin’s Film Divi sion in September 1969 as a market planner. He prev iously worked in marketing with the Coca-Cola Co. in Orlando, Fla., Boston and Atlan ta. He served with the U. S. Coast Guard Reserves. A native of Birm ingham, Ala., where he graduated from Ramsay High School, he earned his B.S. degree in Commerce and Business Administration at the Uni versity of Alabama. He took graduate courses in Marketing at Georgia State College at Atlanta. While at Alabama he was treasurer of Pi Kappa Alpha social fraternity and was a member of Druid's sophmore honorary fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity, and the So ciety for the Advancement of Man agement. *** WILLIAM A. SURRETT has been appointed assistant superintendent, Machines No. 1-9, in the Ecusta Paper Division. He has been with Olin since March 1950, and was a machine tender before his pro motion to fore man in February 1970. He worked with Celanese Corp, of America before joining Olin. A native of Brevard, he grad uated from Bre vard High School and served with the U. S. Army. He is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. FELIX D. SOTOMAYOR has been appointed a business planner in the Fine Paper and Film Group. He came into the Olin organization as result of going to work in 1949 for the John Powell Co. This firm merged with Mathieson Chem ical Corp, prior to Mathieson’s merger with Olin Industries. In ex port sales support work during his earlier years, he became adver tising and promotion supervisor for the Olin International Division in 1960. From New York City he went to Winchester International at New Haven, Conn., and in 1966 trans ferred to the Ecusta Paper Division at Pisgah Forest. He was Ecusta’s advertising and sales promotion manager at the time of his recent move. He is a native of Santurce, Puerto Rico, and completed high school in New York City. He studied international trade and advertising at Bernard M. Baruch College in New York. He is a former member of the Assn, of National Advertisers in New York and the Marketing Communication Center in Princeton, N.J. Roberts Payne Roberts and Payne Elected Safety Officers Two safety officers at Pisgah Forest were elected to leadership of the Western Carolina Safety Council at its annual meeting De cember 17 in Hendersonville. Fletcher H. Roberts, director of safety and loss prevention in the Fine Paper and Film Group, was elected president of the council. Thomas E. Payne, Jr., Film Division safety supervisor and a past presi dent of the council, was elected secretary. They will take office January 13. The council encompasses the 13 westernmost counties with a mem bership representing more than 200 companies. Roberts works with safety per sonnel and programs at the Group’s four operating units: the Ecusta Paper Division plants at Pisgah Forest and Watertown; and the Film Division plants at Pisgah For est and Covington. He was with the North Carolina Department of Labor from 1959 un til he joined Olin in November 1973. For the last two years of that period he was attached to the U. S. De partment of Labor. Prior employ ment was with General Electric at Hendersonville and duPont at Aiken, S. C. Payne was promoted to safety supervisor in Film Division’s plant at Pisgah Forest in September 1973, having been employed at Olin since July 1952. He worked in Process Control until he was appointed as sistant safety supervisor in January 1962.
